Road transport carries most domestic cargo, so choosing the right truck saves money and avoids damage.

Common truck types

• Pickup and small box truck: small loads and city delivery
• Medium box truck or cargo truck: general goods and mid-size loads
• Flatbed truck: long, heavy or oversize items such as steel and machinery
• Tipper or dump truck: sand, gravel, soil and bulk materials
• Container truck with trailer or chassis: 20ft and 40ft containers between port, depots and warehouses
• Refrigerated truck: chilled and frozen food, medicine
• Tanker: fuel, water and liquid cargo

What affects the rate

• Distance and route, including tolls
• Cargo weight, volume and type

• Waiting time at port, factory or border
• Return load availability
• Special handling, such as dangerous goods or oversize loads

How to get a good price

1. Ask for at least three quotes for the same route and cargo
2. Confirm what is included: tolls, loading, unloading, waiting time and insurance
3. Give accurate weight and dimensions
4. Book ahead in busy seasons
5. Agree on the free waiting time and the charge after it
