This is Cambodia's busiest freight corridor, because most imported containers arrive through Sihanoukville and go to Phnom Penh.
Route options
- Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville Expressway: a modern toll road of around 190 km that opened in 2022. It is faster and more consistent than the older road.
- National Road 4 (NR4): the older route that passes through towns and villages, with more traffic and stops.
Approximate travel time
- Expressway: roughly two to three hours for a car, and longer for trucks depending on rules and speed limits
- NR4: commonly longer, particularly in congestion and bad weather

Tolls and rules
- Tolls depend on vehicle type, and trucks pay higher rates
- Expressways may have speed limits, vehicle restrictions and entry requirements for certain vehicle classes
- Check the current rules for heavy trucks and containers before dispatch
Planning tips
- Compare the cost of the toll with the time saved and the risk of delays
- Plan driver rest and fuel stops
- Avoid peak traffic leaving Phnom Penh
- Check weather in the rainy season
- Make sure the container pickup and return depot are confirmed before the truck leaves
For importers
ask your trucker to quote the full round trip, including the empty container return, waiting time at the port and chassis charges.
