- Search: property websites, social media groups, agents and walking around neighborhoods
- Visit in person: check water pressure, electricity, air conditioning, internet, noise and security
- Negotiate: rent, deposit, included services and contract length
- Sign a written lease: read the terms about repairs, notice, deposit return and rent increases
- Move in and take photos: record the condition of everything
Common terms
- Deposit is often one or two months of rent
- Rent is usually paid monthly in advance, often in US dollars
- Utilities (electricity, water, internet, trash) are usually separate, and their rates can differ between landlord-supplied and direct meters
