The ordinary visa is the starting point

Most foreigners who intend to stay and work enter on an ordinary visa rather than a tourist visa. The ordinary visa is the one that can be extended inside the country into the categories that allow long stays, multiple entries and work.

Entering on a tourist visa and trying to convert later is the mistake that forces a visa run. If there is any chance you will be here longer than a holiday, enter on the ordinary visa.

The main extension categories

  • Business extension — the category used by people working, running a company or investing. It is normally issued for up to twelve months at a time, and it is the one that pairs with a work permit.
  • Retirement extension — for applicants above the retirement age threshold who can evidence the required income or savings and support documents.
  • Ordinary extension — a shorter extension for people who are in the country for reasons other than work but are not on a tourist visa.
  • Tourist extension — a short extension that does not permit employment.

Categories have different documentary requirements and different processing routes, and the rules are administrative rather than published in one tidy place. Confirm the current requirements with the immigration department or a licensed agent before your visa expires, not after.

Which one fits a business owner

If you own or manage a Cambodian company, the business extension is normally the correct category, and it is usually supported by the company's registration documents, your employment or directorship evidence, and a work permit or exemption.

Holding a business extension without the corresponding work authorisation is a gap that shows up later — at a bank, at a licensing step, or at renewal.

Timing

Apply before the current stay expires, with a buffer. Renewals are administrative processes with their own queues, and public holidays can remove a week from the window. Overstaying is fined per day and, more importantly, creates a record that complicates later applications.

Multiple entry

If you travel for business, ask for a multiple-entry extension rather than a single-entry one. Re-entering on a new visa each trip resets your paperwork and can break the continuity of your work permit and tax position.

Practical checklist

  1. Enter on the ordinary visa.
  2. Keep your passport valid well beyond the intended stay.
  3. Apply for the extension that matches what you actually do, not the cheapest one.
  4. Keep copies of every extension and entry stamp.
  5. Line up the work permit before the visa renewal falls due.

Visa rules change, and the category names and documents are administrative practice rather than statute. Check the current requirements with the immigration authorities before you rely on any single guide, including this one.
