How to Get a Cambodian Driving License

If you will drive in Cambodia for more than a short visit, a Cambodian license is recommended.

Types

licenses are issued by vehicle category, such as motorbike and car categories.

General steps for foreigners

1. Hold a valid visa that allows residence, and prepare your passport and photos
2. Prepare documents: passport copy, visa, proof of address, a medical certificate if required, and your foreign license for conversion where available
3. Apply at the Department of Public Works and Transport (or an authorized office) and complete the application
4. Take a theory test and a practical test if you are not eligible for a direct conversion
5. Pay the fees and receive the license
6. Renew before it expires

International driving permit

some visitors drive with a foreign license and an international permit for short visits, but rules on recognition and for how long vary, and insurers may require a local license.

Rules for riders and drivers

• Helmets are required for motorbike riders and passengers
• Drink-driving is enforced
• Insurance and registration documents must be carried
• Traffic is busy and informal, so defensive driving is important
