Three layers of tracking for an imported container: the ship, the port and Customs.

Tracking tells you where your cargo is and when you can act. There are three layers to follow.

1. Ship and container tracking

Use the shipping line's website with your container number or B/L number. It shows the vessel, the port of loading, the estimated arrival, and when the container is discharged.

2. Port and terminal status

Once the ship arrives, the terminal shows when the container is discharged, available for pickup, or held. Your forwarder or broker can also check this.

3. Customs status

Customs systems show whether the cargo is on the manifest and the stage of your declaration, including payment and release. Your broker normally checks this, and some customs portals let you search the consignment with details from the B/L.

What you need

  • B/L number and container number
  • Vessel name and voyage number
  • The importer name

Typical order of events

  1. Vessel departs
  2. Manifest is submitted
  3. Vessel arrives and the container is discharged
  4. Declaration filed and assessed
  5. Duty and taxes paid
  6. Release, then truck pickup

Tip

if your tracking shows no updates for several days, ask your forwarder. Transshipment ports sometimes change the schedule.
