FCL vs LCL Shipping: Which Is Cheaper?
The difference between full container (FCL) and shared container (LCL) shipping, and when each is cheaper.
FCL (Full Container Load) means you rent a whole container for your cargo alone. LCL (Less than Container Load) means your cargo shares a container with other shippers.
Main differences
- Best for: FCL suits large shipments, LCL suits small shipments
- Pricing: FCL is priced per container, LCL per cubic meter (CBM) or per ton
- Handling: FCL is loaded and sealed once, LCL is handled at both ends (consolidation and deconsolidation)
- Risk of damage: lower with FCL, higher with LCL
- Transit time: FCL is usually faster, LCL is often slower
- Extra fees: fewer with FCL, more small charges with LCL
Rule of thumb
if your cargo is more than about 15 CBM, FCL is often the same price or cheaper than LCL. Compare quotes for both, because the break-even point varies by route and season.
Choose FCL when
you have a large volume, valuable or fragile cargo, or you need quicker, simpler customs.
Choose LCL when
you ship small volumes, test a new supplier, or do not want to hold stock.
Tip
ask your forwarder for an all-in quote that includes origin charges, freight, destination charges, and local handling, so you can compare real totals.
