The Harmonized System (HS) is a global product classification. Your HS code decides your duty rate, whether you need a permit, and which statistics apply.
How the code is built
the first 6 digits are international. Cambodia, like other ASEAN countries, extends the code with extra digits, so the national tariff code is usually 8 digits or more.
How to find your code
- Describe the product exactly: material, use, how it is made and what it is made of
- Search the Cambodian tariff schedule: the General Department of Customs and Excise publishes it
- Check the supplier's code: a good starting point, but the last digits may differ in Cambodia
- Compare with similar imports: previous declarations for the same product help
- Ask a customs broker: they handle classification every day

Common mistakes
- Choosing a code only because it has a lower duty rate
- Using a vague description that fits several codes
- Classifying a set or a machine by one part
- Copying the supplier's code without checking
Why accuracy matters
a wrong code can lead to underpaid duty, fines, delays and an audit. Keep product specifications, catalogs and photos in case Customs asks how you chose the code.
Rates and codes are updated when the tariff is revised. Always check the current schedule.
